To add effects to my text I double clicked text layer so that a list of effects got brought up, one of these options allow me to put a drop shadow and a stroke on my text which helps it look more realistic to an actual magazine as this is commonly seen on real magazine cell lines.

To make the graphics (squares) transparent I double clicked the layer and adjusted the opacity so that you could see the background yet still denote the actual graphic.
